How do Lost Dungeons of Norrath traps and locks work?

In Lost Dungeons of Norrath (LDoN) adventures you will sometimes come across chests which may be locked and trapped. There are three types of locks and traps - mechanical, magical, and cursed.

MECHANICAL traps can only be sensed by a bard or rogue using their sense trap skill. These traps can then be disabled by the bard or rogue with their disarm skill. Mechanical locks can only be unlocked by a bard or rogue with their lockpick skill.

MAGICAL traps can only be sensed and disabled by intelligence-based casters (enchanters, magicians, necromancers and wizards) using their spells. Magical locks are likewise only unlocked by intelligence-based casters using their spells.

CURSED traps can only be sensed and disabled by necromancers and wisdom-based casters (clerics, druids and shamen) using their spells. Magical locks are likewise only unlocked by necromancers and wisdom-based casters using their spells.

(Necromancers are the only class that can deal with more than one type of trap and lock.)

The basic procedure is:

  1. Have one of the party attempt to sense traps. If it tells them they cannot sense that type of trap then you need to have someone else check for another type.
  2. When you have determined what type of trap it is have that same person attempt to disarm it.
  3. Once disarmed that person should also be able to unlock it.

There are three different levels of spells, with the higher level spells being able to deal with higher level instances locks and traps. For a magician the spells are:

sense trap: Wuggan's Lesser Appraisal, Wuggan's Appraisal, Wuggan's Greater Appraisal

disarm trap: Wuggan's Lesser Discombobulation, Wuggan's Discombobulation, Wuggan's Greater Discombobulation

picklock: Wuggan's Lesser Extrication, Wuggan's Extrication, Wuggan's Greater Extrication
